How AI-Based Farm Equipment Will Increase Safety But Cost Jobs

Corn Maze Planted with Smart Technology

Pumpkin Hollow, the longest running agritourism farm in Arkansas, took a precision ag approach to construct its famous corn maze this year. The cornfield was planted with a high-tech planter, which saved a week’s worth of work. “This was such an incredible experience,” Pumpkin Hollow co-owner Ellen Dalton tells FarmProgress. “I got to ride in the tractor as the maze was planted and see the planter turn on and off. It saved a lot of work from the way we have designed the maze in the past, which was walking the six-acre field in June, measuring, marking with ribbons and flags, then cutting the design in the field.”

Precision Survey Reveals Trends & Dealer Challenges

CropLife reveals some of the key takeaways from its 2023 Precision Agriculture Dealership Survey, including the barriers that dealers face when offering precision services. Dealers indicated the biggest three barriers were “it’s difficult to find employees who can deliver precision ag services;” “the equipment needed to provide precision services changes quickly, increasing my costs;” and “the fees we can charge for precision services are not high enough to make precision services profitable.”

New Dealership Group Increases Access to Precision Technologies

AGCO dealer True Ag & Turf is being formed from the acquisition of Nebraska AGCO dealers Manzer Equipment, Osmond, Neb.; Merz Farm Equipment, Falls City, Neb.; and West Point Implement of Columbus, Columbus, Neb. “AGCO is excited about True Ag’s introduction to Nebraska farmers,” said Bill Hurley, AGCO VP of Distribution. “They’ll bring full-line access to Massey Ferguson and Fendt, and that means greater precision ag technologies for growers in eastern Nebraska.” Merz produced a video about the new dealership group.
