Artificial intelligence has become the hottest topic in marketing, publishing, and media. Depending on whom you ask, AI is either the greatest productivity tool ever created or the beginning of the end of authentic communication.
The reality, as usual, lies somewhere in the middle.
Over the past year, I've experimented extensively with AI while helping businesses develop marketing campaigns, promotional strategies, content plans, and audience-growth initiatives. What I've discovered is that AI can dramatically improve productivity — but only if you remember one important rule:
AI should amplify your voice, not replace it.
One of the biggest mistakes marketers make is accepting AI-generated content as finished content. The result is often generic language, predictable phrasing, and copy that sounds exactly like everyone else's.
Your audience notices.
Customers and prospects may not know a piece of content was generated by AI, but they can tell when it lacks personality, experience, or conviction.
What makes your organization different isn't your technology. It's your perspective.
The organizations that will benefit most from AI are those that use it to eliminate routine work while preserving human judgment. We use AI to generate ideas, organize research, create outlines, suggest headlines, and accelerate first drafts. But the final product always requires a human editor who understands the audience, the brand, and the goals of the communication.
I often compare AI to having a very talented junior assistant. It can complete tasks quickly and provide useful suggestions. But it doesn't possess decades of industry experience, customer knowledge, or strategic insight.
That's still your job.
The good news is that marketers don't need to choose between efficiency and authenticity. They can have both.
The companies that thrive in the AI era won't be the ones that generate the most content. They'll be the ones that use technology to spend more time thinking, strategizing, and connecting with customers.
In other words, they'll sound more human — not less.
That's a future worth embracing.
