Incorporating Precision Ag into Alfalfa Production in the South

This article from Hay & Forage Grower details how University of Georgia researchers are collaborating to demonstrate the benefits of precision farming to southern forage and livestock producers. The goal of the project is to make precision ag “more commonplace” in the south.

Yield maps generated from both the in-field data (Figure 2) and the satellite imagery (Figure 3) showed significant yield variability

Highlighting the Benefits of Hylio’s AgroDrone

Hylio’s AgroDrone is “easier to operate, more efficient and less expensive than a row crop sprayer or plane,” as described in this article from Farm & Ranch Guide. Hylio CEO Arthur Erickson explains what makes the product stand out and why he believes it’s the “crop spraying precision ag drone of the future.”

The Hylio AgroDrone sprays a crop while the crop is growing.

A Conversation with Swarm Farm CEO Andrew Bate

Farm Innovations goes 1-on-1 with Swarm Farm CEO Andrew Bate at FIRA, the California robotics & ag technology forum. Swarm Farm has covered over 1.1 million commercial acres, 60,000 hours of operation, and reduced pesticide inputs by an estimated 600 tons with their autonomous SwarmBots. Bate shares his vision for the future of precision ag equipment.

Turning Precision Data into Art

Nathan Faleide has spent about 20 years in agribusiness, helping farmers use aerial and satellite imagery in precision farming. Now, he’s started “Boundri,” a business that prints those images on novelty items including travel mugs, play rugs and functional or wall hangings, based on views of farmland anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.

Nathan Faleide’s wife, Rachel, and their daughters, Holly, left, and Olive, play with 1/64-scale farm equipment toys on Boundri's play rugs.

Exploring the Future of Indoor Farming with AppHarvest

“Innovate or die,” says AppHarvest CEO Jonathan Webb. In this video feature from Business Insider, Webb lays out the company’s vision for growing more food with less resources through a network of high-tech indoor farms across central Appalachia. The indoor facility featured in this story uses 90% less water than a traditional farm by capturing rainwater on the roof, sending it through gullies and pipes into a retention pond, and using sensors to make sure the plants get only what they need.
