Salin 247 to Try Sidedressing with Autonomous Electric Unit

Dave Krog, founder of Iowa-based farming-as-a-service company Salin 247, plans to do a proof-of-concept this summer for a Y-Drop sidedress application that uses his autonomous electric planter. Krog says it’s possible to take the planter units off the small, lightweight machine and replace it with a liquid system. “The idea is to leverage the components on the machine across all the different farm operations,” Krog says during this episode of Farm Next. Is Kentucky Becoming the Agtech Capital of the US?

Kentucky is the birthplace of no-till farming, and no-tillers are a group of customers that continue to embrace precision technology. This article from The Lane Report identifies agtech companies following in the inventive footsteps of no-tillers and the incentives Kentucky has in place to attract and strengthen ag businesses that set up shop in the state. “We believe that Kentucky can step up to the challenges facing our agriculture communities and become the agriculture hub of technology and innovation in the United States,” says Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles.

Deere Invests in Kenyan Agtech Company Hello Tractor

John Deere invested in Hello Tractor, a Kenyan agtech company that connects smallholder farmers in Africa and Asia with farm equipment. A Deere spokesman says Hello Tractor aligns with Deere’s Leap Ambition to make 100% of new small ag equipment connectivity-enabled by 2026. Deere launched its Startup Collaborator program in 2018 with Hello Tractor as an initial participating company.
