Brainpower vs. Horsepower: An Alternative Future for Ag Equipment

Mineral CEO Elliott Grant explores some notable trends in the precision ag equipment industry including new paths to revenue and productivity gains. “Over the next decade, AI will play a critical role in greater crop resilience, improved productivity and lower environmental impact,” Grant says. “We’re taking the first steps towards a more sustainable agriculture system — a journey which begins with being willing to ask ‘why?’”

5 States are Leading the Way in Precision Ag

In his latest column, Gregg Hillyer, Progressive Farmer editor-in-chief, shares his precision-related observations from farm shows this winter and lists the top 5 states for precision ag usage. “Most northeastern states have adoption rates below the U.S. average of 27%,” Hillyer says. “The (GAO) study theorizes that lower adoption may be due to smaller farm sizes and diversified farming with multiple crop types in the region.”

Why Ag Tech & Connectivity Matter More than Ever

“In rural America there are areas without connectivity and if that happens when we’re in a field the wheels simply stop turning,” Iowa farmer Laura Bloome said during the World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit in San Francisco, Calif. Matthew Grassi covers more key takeaways from the Summit in this Farm Journal Smart Farming feature, including how the John Deere-SpaceX partnership has heightened farmer awareness of the potential benefits of satellite connectivity.

Syngenta Reaches 250 Million-Acre Milestone

Syngenta announced a new milestone on LinkedIn — its digital solutions are being used on about 250 million acres worldwide. Shane Thomas covered this news in his latest Upstream Ag Insights newsletter. “I am curious about how digitized acres influence the Syngenta business,” Thomas says. “Bayer has taken swings at illustrating how FieldView Plus users add value to the Bayer business, sharing stats that FieldView Plus users have higher seed purchase loyalty, give a higher percentage of their wallet and use higher seeding rates compared to non-users. It isn’t clear if it’s correlation of causation, but I commend them for putting the effort in nonetheless. For Syngenta, I was hoping its intended 2024 IPO presented an opportunity to illustrate the value that one digitized acre brings to their business, or what a digitally engaged customer means for their business. However, just this week Syngenta Group decided to withdraw its application for IPO on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Syngenta said it will look to restart the listing process either in China or on a different exchange, when conditions are right, as well as explore alternative sources of funding.”
